Style Techie’s 2013 New Year’s Resolutions

New Year's ResolutionsNew year, new beginnings. So, time to start up that list of areas we want to improve as 2013 starts. 2012 seems like a blur. I only started this blog last October, but I’m proud of the way it looks and the posts I’ve been publishing. Thank you to everyone that has read this blog!

I created Style Techie to have a space to express my interests and opinions about style and tech. Both are areas that are not necessarily synonymous, but why be boxed into a single category? I think the best blogs are created when the people behind them feel passionately about what they’re blogging about. That’s how a community is created – when like-minded people come together and share their interests and what they know.

My New Year’s resolutions for 2013 fall into that category – to expand upon my interests and share that experience and what I’ve learned in this blog.

New Year’s Resolution #1: Blog on a Regular Basis

A blog is only as good as its posts. There is so much content and information out on the web and things get outdated quickly. The only way to grow and keep an audience is to provide the information they’re interested in and to keep your readers coming back for more – with content that will engage and enchant them, be it text, photos, videos, graphics, etc. Hence, the importance of having a regularly updated blog.

My goal is to blog at least once a week. I’ve started several blogs in the past and they’ve fallen on the wayside because of this or that. Basically, I wasn’t very good about staying on top of my posts. I think a blog post a week is an attainable goal and I will try to reach that if not more.

New Year’s Resolution #2: Get Better at Coding

Coding is the backbone of the web. I think it’s a good practice to understand basic programming languages. I’ve blogged about Codeacademy in the past and I think it’s an awesome resource to get a general understanding of how to code in the most commonly used programming languages.

However, I have not been the best at going through the lessons on a consistent basis. So, my goal, like blogging, is to complete Codeacademy lessons at least once a week. And, to check out other similar online tutorials. There are so many great, comprehensive tutorials online, from Khan Academy to Coursera. The resources are there; it’s time to take advantage of them!

New Year’s Resolution #3: Continue to Improve

I know, this resolution is really, really broad. And that’s basically what a resolution is – to improve oneself. I’m purposefully leaving this one broad because the inspiration to improve an aspect of oneself can spring at any moment and can be something as small as going to bed earlier each night or as big as moving to another country.

So, I’m leaving this one broad to fit whatever may come up during the year that I want to improve on.

A few things I can think up right off the top of my head include:

  • Cutting my hair: right now, my hair is an overgrown bob. I want to go for style like Kate Lanphear. Love her style and her hair.
  • Speak up more: in both my personal and professional life. I’m not shy and I love talking to people. But sometimes, it’s still a challenge to be an advocate for myself. And I know that if you don’t speak up for yourself, no one will.
