I like Brad Pitt. He’s done a few good movies. And he’s damn good looking. So, iconic actor and iconic perfume: ultimate mashup right? At first, I thought it was a little weird that a man would be in an ad for a woman’s perfume. But, it’s Brad Pitt.
Well, putting two icons together doesn’t always lead to advertising magic. I love watching perfume commercials actually. They’re glamorous and light and fun. They take you to a specially curated world of music, beautiful men and women, and scrumptious clothes. But, this Chanel No. 5 commercial is a flop.
The commercial doesn’t evoke anything for me. Granted, Brad Pitt is great to look at and has a sexy, deep voice. But his vague aphorisms and cliches (to wit: “It’s not a journey…every journey ends…”) have nothing to do with perfume or the legend of Chanel. I don’t leave the commercial with an understanding of Chanel No. 5 and why I would want to wear it. Where’s the lush production? The evocative atmosphere? Even though Brad Pitt is hot, just having him stare off into space and into the camera does not a perfume sell.
At least the advert spawned some great parodies. One of which was done by SNL this past weekend.
